Ridesharing in Las Vegas: Do Uber and Lyft Drivers Need Extra Auto Insurance?

Driving for Uber, Lyft or other rideshare services may leave gaps in your personal auto coverage. Almirola Royal Services can help Nevada drivers review their policies and find coverage that meets their needs.

Understanding the Insurance Gap

Understanding when various types of insurance may apply while driving for a rideshare app typically depends on which of three periods you’re in while on the job. During Period 1, your app is on, but no ride has been accepted. Coverage may be most limited here, as your personal auto policy typically does not apply, and the rideshare company’s coverage may be minimal. An accident during this time can result in out-of-pocket costs.

Period 2 covers the time between accepting a ride and picking up the passenger, when rideshare company coverage may provide greater financial protection, but standard personal auto insurance still likely won’t provide coverage. Period 3, when a passenger is in your vehicle, may offer the broadest rideshare company coverage, but, again, personal auto policies generally won’t apply.

Why Specialized Rideshare Insurance Matters

Nevada personal auto policies typically exclude commercial use, including driving for a rideshare app. Ride-sharing without an endorsement may result in a denied claim or policy cancellation. Ride-share insurance can help fill the gap between your personal policy and the rideshare company’s commercial coverage while your app is on. Ask your broker about available endorsements or other options.

What to Look for in a Rideshare Endorsement

Not every ride-share endorsement covers the same periods or platforms. Some may only apply during Period 1, while others may extend coverage through all three. When reviewing policies, it may help to compare covered periods, deductible amounts and which rideshare platforms are included.
